Ice Cores And What They Tell Us About Global Climate

Ice cores provide information about the climate in the past and this allows us to compare it with the current climate to determine how it stacks up. While some of the readers may know a lot about ice cores, this posting provides general knowledge for those of you that are not so familiar with ice cores. The next posting will discuss the results of the information gather at two sites in the Antarctic.

The Vostok location, one of many places where ice cores are drilled, is part of the Antarctic ice cap. At this location the snow falls each year and the temperature doesn’t rise above freezing. In fact this location is called the coldest place on Earth.

This is how the ice sheets are formed. The surface layer of snow contains gaps between the snowflakes containing air. As subsequent season’s experience snow falls, the older snow begins to compress. The compression forms a grainy material (firn) said to resemble the texture of granulated sugar. As the snow above continues to accumulate, the firn eventually densifies and closes off the pores and the air is firmly trapped. The ice sheet now has inclusions which can be analyzed. When the ice is cored out of this ice sheet, large amounts of information can be obtained for analysis. Wiki has this to say about the ice core samples:

“Ice cores contain an abundance of information about climate. Inclusions in the snow of each year remain in the ice, such as wind-blown dust, ash, pollen, bubbles of atmospheric gas and radioactive substances. The variety of climatic proxies is greater than in any other natural recorder of climate, such as tree rings or sediment layers. These include (proxies for) temperature, ocean volume, precipitation, chemistry and gas composition of the lower atmosphere, volcanic eruptions, solar variability, sea-surface productivity, desert extent and forest fires.

4 Major Warmers Change Their Mind And Now Back Building Nukes

Back when there was temporary shortage of natural gas, that fossil fuel was the favorite of warmers. When it became abundant, they were against it.   They just pretend to be even handed. Well what about nuclear energy? It doesn’t produce carbon dioxide (CO2) but they do not like it. My guess is that many of them are just following through on their objective of destroying capitalism.

However, a group of influential warmers now say they were wrong to oppose nuclear energy.

At the Paris COP21 in December 2015, a press conference was held where 4 noted warmers announced that they were going to back development of nuclear energy.

Plate Climatology Theory

ClimateChangeDispatch posted “Global Warming and Plate Climatology Theory” on 7 October 2014.   The posting was written by James Edward Kamis, a Geologist who says he believes there is a probable connection between Geology and Climate. He begins this discussion of his theory by saying:

“The Sun, quite obviously, is the first order driver of Earth’s climate, but a much neglected second order driver can contribute significantly to short-term variations. The theory proposed herein is that periods of active Earth tectonism can be correlated to periods of active climate change and climate related events.

Increased global tectonic activity equates to more faulting and crustal plate movement, which leads to more global heat release from faults, fractures and volcanoes that are more active.

Altered heat input equates to climate change.

Are Seafloor Volcanoes Altering The Climate?

I have received some interesting email of late that states that seafloor volcanoes are altering the Globe’s climate. So, I have been combing through the internet to see what I could find on this topic.

One theory is that seafloor volcanoes are more active in the time of glaciations than at time of the warming period in between. The thinking is that the increased weight of the ocean’s water, as it rises due to glaciers melting, reduces the activity of the many seafloor volcanoes.   The converse is true about the land-based volcanoes that would become more active as the weight of the glacial ice disappears. The ash emitted from land-based volcanoes can cause cooling of the atmosphere but seafloor ash does not get into the atmosphere.

2015 Was Not The Hottest Year

Seems like that every day some warmer announces that 2015 was the hottest year on record. One wants to ask, “what record” are you taking about? Reconstructed temperatures for thousands if not millions of years suggest that there are many periods that have had higher temperatures that those we are experiencing today. For those years which we have reasonably accurate temperature measuring devices they would suggest that 2015 was likely not the hottest although it might be among the hottest.   Of course there is the problem of “man-made” warming as discussed in this posting “ This Is “Man-Made” Global Warming Courtesy Of NASA”.

To give another perspective on this issue, let us use the recent posting by James Delingpole “No, 2015 Was Not The Hottest Year Evah…”. Delingpole has a really sharp wit. He uses it in this posting of his, and if you wish to experience it, click on the posting link above.   I plan on just using his 5 points that he believes clarify the issue and demonstrate that 2015 was not the hottest year. So here goes:

“Here is why they’re all talking rubbish and you needn’t worry about that “Hottest Year Evah” one bit.

  1. The satellite data show no warming

Compare the two trends (below): the upward one comes from the surface temperature dataset used by NASA GISS (and NOAA and the Met Office – they’re all pretty much interchangeable); the flat trend comes from the more accurate satellite data. Which one do you trust?

  1. NASA has fiddled the raw temperature data on an ‘unbelievable scale’

From the publicly available data, Ewert made an unbelievable discovery: Between the years 2010 and 2012 the data measured since 1881 were altered so that they showed a significant warming, especially after 1950. […] A comparison of the data from 2010 with the data of 2012 shows that NASA-GISS had altered its own datasets so that especially after WWII a clear warming appears – although it never existed.

Lomborg Says Wind And Solar Will Still Not Be Competitive By 2040

Bjorn Lomborg asks in his posting “Are wind and solar energy already competitive with fossil fuels?” He says no they are not and probably will not be competitive even by 2040.

“We constantly hear how solar and wind energy is already cheaper than fossil fuels. A few months ago, Bloomberg Business ”wind power is now the cheapest electricity to produce in both Germany and the U.K., even without government subsidies.” If renewable energy is cheaper than dirty fossil fuels, why isn’t everyone adopting them? Are we so irrationally addicted to polluting energy sources that we won’t even embrace cheaper and cleaner alternatives?

Well, as you might have guessed, it turns out that wind and solar energy isn’t cheaper than fossil fuels in the real world. A new report by the same Bloomberg now warns that if subsidies are phased out by 2020 in the U.K, the renewable industry will dry up and drop off a cliff. ”

300 Scientists Tell Chairman of the House Science Committee: ‘we want NOAA to adhere to law of the Data Quality Act’

This posting is a reblog of Anthony Watts posting on his site “WattsUpWithThat?”
The issue here is that NOAA, undoubtedly to assist the COP21 Paris meeting participants, manipulated their global temperature record to in an attempt to show that the 18+years of no significant warming (“the pause”) had not really occurred.

Now 300 scientists have sent a letter to Representative Lamar Smith saying that NOAA did not follow the Data Quality Act. This, along with Smiths subpoenas of email communications from those people in NOAA who manipulated the temperature record, hopefully with out the perpetrators of this scam.

Is Senator Whitehouse Of Rhode Island A Hypocrite?

Invenergy has announced plans to build a $700 million, 900-MW natural gas powered electrical generating plant in Burrillville, Rhode Island (RI). Governor Raimondo hails this as a needed “clean energy generation facility that will reduce electricity prices in RI. Well maybe. RI along with other five other New England states are supplied by ISO-New England, and they all pay a single price for their electricity irrespective of its source.   The Governor adds that it will help “integrate intermittent renewable energy”.

In Invenergy’s applications for permits, according to the Conservation Law Foundation (clf), they want permission to run oil for up to 60 days per year if natural gas is unavailable. Everybody needs backup plans to keep the citizens of those 6 six states supplied reliably.

I think that RI is doing the right thing and I wish them success.

BUT, BUT, WAIT A MINUTE. I believe Sheldon Whitehouse is a US Senator from the state of RI.   Yes, I am right on that.

Warmer Proof For Ocean Acidification Is Invalid

In 2004, a paper by Dr Richard Feely and Dr Christopher Sabine was published that purports to show that as the atmospheric CO2 increases, the oceans become acidified (1).   In 2010, Dr Feely made a presentation to the US Congress where he used this graph to illustrate the reduction of seawater pH.   It is reported to be widely used as a reference.

The graph is shown below:

Feelygraph

The question that one researcher asked, when he saw the chart was-Why the pH readings, in Feely’s chart, began in 1988?; which was surprising, as instrumental ocean pH data have been measured for more than 100 years — since the invention of the glass electrode pH (GEPH) meter.

Marrita Noon’s posting “What if Obama’s climate change is based on pHraud?” relates the story of this researcher’s observations:

Bang Bang, FOI shot the NY Times Down

Using the Sonny Bono’s song title seems right because the Freedom Of Information Act (FOI) revealed the New York Times’ the manipulation efforts to get a really scary story about “Acidification of the Oceans”. And the FOI has shot it down.

Late last year, the Times posted an Op-Ed “Our Deadened, Carbon-Soaked Seas” timed to appear prior to the Second Ocean Conference where “ocean acidification (OA)” would be discussed. The authors of the piece were Richard W. Spinrad, a chief scientist of the U.S. NOAA and Ian Boyd, a chief scientific adviser to the British government.

The cartoon image accompanying the NY Times posting, shown below, is not too subtle.

After it was posted, Steve Milloy, proprietor of Junkscience.com, wanted to know more. This is what he did in his words:

Curious, I submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to NOAA for the e-mail related to the development and publication of the op-ed. I received 443 pages of e-mail in return.

First, the op-ed was actually written by NOAA staff Madelyn Applebaum, not Spinrad or Boyd. The purpose was to tout NOAA not inform the public about ocean acidification.”
