Near Miss By Asteroid On 19 April 2017

Reposting a Dr Roy Spencer’s  posting about  a large Asteriod that will pass close to the Earth on April 19  2017.

Half-mile Wide Asteroid Close Approach on Wednesday

April 18th, 2017

An asteroid capable of destroying Washington D.C. and New York City at the same time will be making its closest approach to Earth on April 19.

At a half-mile wide, it will have over 30,000 times as much mass as the 2013 meteor which exploded over Russia in 2013.

The current asteroid, called “2014 JO25“, is traveling at the unimaginably fast speed of 75,000 mph. It has been estimated that an asteroid of this size is capable of wiping out an area the size of New England, and causing global cooling from the dust that would be lofted into the stratosphere. “2014 JO25” will be the closest appoach asteroid of this size in the last 13 years.

Good News, Bad News

The good news is that even at closest approach, the asteroid — about the size of the Rock of Gibraltar — will safely pass by about 4.6 times as far away from Earth as the moon.

The bad news is that this asteroid was only discovered in 2014, and even if it was on a collision course with Earth, there probably would not have been enough time to mount a mission to hit it with a nuclear-weapon tipped rocket. This is why NASA has been surveying the skies, discovering new asteroids on a routine basis. While most of these are small, the relatively recent discovery of Wednesday’s asteroid suggests we will not have much time to respond if we discover one on a collision course with Earth. I suspect we will eventually have a rocket designed and ready for an intercept, just in case.

Paris Agreement Expenditures Will Not Reduce Global Temperatures Significantly

It is always a good thing to let Bjorn Lomborg views be known.  Lomborg is often called the Skeptical Environmentalist because he believes that global warming is caused by man’s activities, but he differs from most of the warmers, in that he believes all the vast sums of money spent on trying to reduce CO2 emissions will be wasted.

He organized and runs the Copenhagen Consensus. He invites expert economist to review a variety of ways to cope with global warming. The Consensus invariably says, for example, that people having clean water, education, etc. are much better uses for the money opposed to using it to combat CO2 emissions.  The following video is written and narrated by Lomborg.  He shows that the Paris Agreement has plans to spend a lot of money and the results will not come close to achieving their stated goal of holding global temperature rise below 2C.

I do not believe the science supports them spending the money either.

In light of recent events – a possible United States climate change action plan

I am reblogging this posting from WattsUpWithThat titled “In light of recent events-a Possible United States Climate Change Action Plan” by Christopher Monckton of Brenchley. In a recent posting, I said that if Hillary Clinton was to become the President of the US, there would be no way to stop the misguided catastrophic global warming theory. Monckton has provided a 1O step plan to stop these wasteful expenditures that can be enacted by Donald Trump, who was elected to become the US’s next President.

6-6-16: The Designated Day of the Climate Tipping Point

Once again the warmers will show they can not produce anything except scare stories. I like the comment that “In climate ‘science’ they get the.money before they provide a result (just in case there is none)”

Hard Drive Hell

Hello. Recovering from hard drive failures. The I Mac gave up late last week, after a week’s

worth of talking to Apple techs and a trip to the Apple store to work with a “genius”. At times it looked like we could make the Mac healthy. But not to be. So I turned to my Dell laptop that had lost its hard drive. Got a new hard drive and installed it plus new drivers, etc. Just put this Open Office program on the laptop. So I am giving it a try to makes sure that Open Office works with my blog.

A stunning ‘hockey stick’ – How access to energy brought humanity forward

Anthony Watts, proprietor of WUWT has posted “A stunning ‘hockey stick’ – How access to energy brought humanity forward”. The charts show the dramatic reduction in global poverty since the invention and use of the steam engine. Fossil fuels have “powered” this improvement in the human condition. I am reblogging Watts’ posting.

Is Senator Whitehouse Of Rhode Island A Hypocrite?

Invenergy has announced plans to build a $700 million, 900-MW natural gas powered electrical generating plant in Burrillville, Rhode Island (RI). Governor Raimondo hails this as a needed “clean energy generation facility that will reduce electricity prices in RI. Well maybe. RI along with other five other New England states are supplied by ISO-New England, and they all pay a single price for their electricity irrespective of its source.   The Governor adds that it will help “integrate intermittent renewable energy”.

In Invenergy’s applications for permits, according to the Conservation Law Foundation (clf), they want permission to run oil for up to 60 days per year if natural gas is unavailable. Everybody needs backup plans to keep the citizens of those 6 six states supplied reliably.

I think that RI is doing the right thing and I wish them success.

BUT, BUT, WAIT A MINUTE. I believe Sheldon Whitehouse is a US Senator from the state of RI.   Yes, I am right on that.

Double standards in the Government’s Gold King mine disaster whitewash

Reblogging this posting on how the EPA blew it and let millions of gallons of polluted mine water go into Western rivers and nobody has been arrested, fined or even fired. The following are quotes from the posting to give you some idea of what is going on.

“When a private citizen or company violates rules, misrepresents facts or pollutes a river, government penalties are swift and severe. It’s different when the government lies or screws up.

Their actions were grossly negligent. In fact, they are criminal offenses under the Clean Water Act and other laws that the government routinely uses to fine and jail private citizens and company employees, such as John Pozsgai, Bill Ellen, and employees of Freedom Industries and the Pacific & Arctic Railway. None of these “convicted felons” intended to cause those accidents, and all were “absolutely, deeply sorry” for what happened. Why should the state and federal culprits be treated any differently – get off scot free – after causing far worse environmental damage?”

An Ocean of Plastic

I have always taken for a loss when I read postings that claim plastic garbage patches the size of Texas are floating in some ocean. I am reblogging Kip Hansen’s posting that disputes these claims. He also notes that microbes are consuming much of the plastic. His posting is long but well worth reading.
